Why United Kingdom
London is familiar to many Indian travellers; the countryside is the surprise. We pair a city stay with the Cotswolds, the Lake District or the Scottish Highlands — country houses, long walks and very good food.

The placesworth the journey.
Westminster
Westminster Abbey has hosted every coronation since 1066 and holds the tombs of monarchs, poets and scientists. Across the square, the Houses of Parliament stretch along the Thames beneath the Elizabeth Tower, home of Big Ben, the great bell that has struck the hours since 1859.
Our tip Tour Parliament on a Saturday, when guided visits run through the debating chambers, and see the Abbey at its first morning slot.
Buckingham Palace and the Royal Parks
The monarch's London residence faces The Mall, with St James's Park and Green Park spreading out on either side. The Changing of the Guard draws crowds to the forecourt, and in summer the State Rooms open to visitors, filled with paintings from the Royal Collection.
Our tip Watch the guard marching along The Mall or at Wellington Barracks rather than pressing against the palace railings.
Tower of London
Founded by William the Conqueror nearly a thousand years ago, the Tower has served as palace, prison and treasury. The Crown Jewels are kept in the Jewel House, Yeomen Warders lead tours of the grounds, and Tower Bridge rises just downstream on the river.
Our tip Go straight to the Jewel House at opening time, then join a Yeoman Warder tour once the queue has built up.
The British Museum
Two million years of human history fill this vast neoclassical museum, from the Rosetta Stone and Egyptian mummies to the Parthenon sculptures. Its South Asian galleries hold remarkable Hindu, Buddhist and Jain sculpture, and the glass-roofed Great Court is a destination in itself.
Our tip General entry is free, but booking a private guide or a timed slot on a weekday morning makes the visit far more rewarding.
Windsor Castle
The oldest and largest occupied castle in the world has been a royal home for over nine hundred years. Visitors tour the State Apartments and St George's Chapel, where many monarchs are buried, while the Long Walk runs nearly three miles through Windsor Great Park.
Our tip Check the royal calendar before booking, as the castle closes to the public on certain dates for official events.
Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile
Edinburgh Castle sits high on volcanic rock, guarding the Scottish Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny. From its gates the Royal Mile descends past closes, kirks and whisky shops to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the monarch's official residence in Scotland.
Our tip Book castle tickets ahead in August, when the Edinburgh festivals fill the city, and arrive for the one o'clock gun.

What to eat in United Kingdom
Afternoon tea
Finger sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream and jam, and fine pastries served on tiered stands in a grand salon. Vegetarian versions are standard, and many kitchens will prepare a Jain menu with advance notice.
Borough Market
London's oldest food market, beneath the railway arches near London Bridge, is filled with cheesemongers, bakers and street-food stalls. Vegetarian choices are abundant, and it is ideal for an informal lunch.
Sunday roast
A traditional pub lunch of roast meat, Yorkshire pudding and vegetables is a British ritual. Most country and city pubs now offer a nut roast or vegetable Wellington, though gravy may contain meat stock.
Modern Indian dining
London has some of the most ambitious Indian restaurants outside India, several holding Michelin stars. They are a fine choice for a celebratory dinner and handle vegetarian and Jain requests with ease.
Travel tips for United Kingdom
Getting there from India
Direct flights from Delhi to London take around nine to ten hours. We use trains and private drivers outside London.
For travellers from India
Nonstop flights from Delhi to Heathrow take around nine and a half hours, and the UK requires its own Standard Visitor visa, separate from Schengen, so apply at least six to eight weeks ahead and allow time for biometrics. Vegetarian and Jain food is easier to find in Britain than almost anywhere in Europe. Restaurants often add a discretionary service charge of around twelve and a half per cent, so check the bill before tipping again.
Visas & entry
Indian passport holders need a visa for the United Kingdom. Rules and processing times change, so we confirm the current requirements when you book, prepare the document checklist with you, and help schedule any appointments.
Good to know
