Why Vietnam
Vietnam is a country of journeys: Hanoi's old quarter, a night on Ha Long Bay, lanterns in Hoi An, the energy of Ho Chi Minh City. Two weeks lets you see the length of it at a human pace.
Plan a journey to VietnamMost visited places in Vietnam
The placesworth the journey.
Hanoi Old Quarter
Thirty-six guild streets, many still named for the trades once practised on them, wind north of Hoan Kiem Lake in a tangle of scooters, shophouses and street kitchens. Early mornings bring tai chi by the lake, and the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first university, lies a short drive west.
Our tip Walk the lake shore at sunrise, when locals exercise along the water and the traffic has yet to build.
Ha Long Bay
Nearly two thousand limestone islands rise from the emerald waters of the Gulf of Tonkin, a UNESCO World Heritage site best seen from the deck of a small cruise ship. Days are spent kayaking into hidden lagoons, exploring caves and watching the karsts fade into mist at dusk.
Our tip Choose a route into the neighbouring Lan Ha Bay, where fewer boats travel and the scenery is just as dramatic.
Trang An, Ninh Binh
Often called Ha Long Bay on land, Trang An is a maze of rice paddies and river channels threading beneath limestone peaks and through low caves. Local women row sampans along the water, and nearby Hoa Lu was the capital of Vietnam in the tenth century.
Our tip Take the boat trip in the early morning, then climb the steps at Hang Mua for the view across the valley.
Hoi An Ancient Town
A remarkably preserved merchant town of mustard-yellow houses, Chinese assembly halls and the covered Japanese Bridge, all set along the Thu Bon river. At night silk lanterns glow in every doorway, and the town's tailors can make a suit or dress within a day or two.
Our tip Explore in the hour after breakfast, before day-trippers arrive from Da Nang, and return after dark for the lanterns.
Ho Chi Minh City
Vietnam's commercial capital mixes French colonial landmarks, such as the Central Post Office and the Opera House, with rooftop bars and busy markets. The War Remnants Museum is sobering and essential, and the Cu Chi tunnels lie about ninety minutes north.
Our tip Visit the Cu Chi tunnels early in the day, before the heat and the group tours arrive.
Mekong Delta
In the far south, the Mekong breaks into a web of channels lined with orchards, coconut groves and stilt houses. Life happens on the water here, from floating markets to small family workshops making rice paper and coconut sweets by hand.
Our tip Stay overnight near Can Tho so you can reach the Cai Rang floating market at dawn, when trading is at its liveliest.
Vietnam itinerary
Six days in Vietnam
From Hanoi's old streets to a night among the limestone islands of the north, then south to lantern-lit Hoi An.
A starting point, not a package: we reshape the days around your dates, pace and who is travelling.
Shape this itinerary- Day01
Hanoi · Arrival
You are met at Noi Bai airport and driven to your hotel near Hoan Kiem Lake. In the evening, a private cyclo ride through the Old Quarter leads to a relaxed dinner.
- Day02
Hanoi · Temples and street life
Your guide takes you to the Temple of Literature and the One Pillar Pagoda, then on foot through the guild streets. The afternoon is free before a water puppet performance in the early evening.
- Day03
Lan Ha Bay · Overnight cruise
A private car covers the expressway to the coast in around two and a half hours. Board a small cruise ship to kayak among the karsts, swim from the deck and dine on board as the light fades.
- Day04
Hoi An · Into central Vietnam
After a sunrise on deck, return to Hanoi for a short flight of around an hour and a half to Da Nang. A forty-five minute drive brings you to Hoi An in time for the lanterns along the river.
- Day05
Hoi An · Craft and countryside
A guided morning walk through the assembly halls and merchant houses is followed by a cooking class or a cycle through the rice fields of Tra Que. Spend the late afternoon on An Bang beach.
- Day06
Da Nang · Departure
Enjoy a final unhurried breakfast and perhaps a last fitting with your tailor. Your driver then takes you to Da Nang airport for your onward flight.

Where to stay in Vietnam
Hoan Kiem & the French Quarter, Hanoi
Grand colonial avenues on one side of the lake, the energy of the Old Quarter on the other. Suits first-time visitors and families who like to explore on foot.
Hoi An & An Bang
Riverside villas close to the old town or quiet beachfront retreats a short drive away. A natural fit for honeymooners and slower travellers.
District 1, Ho Chi Minh City
The centre of the south's energy, with the best restaurants, rooftop bars and colonial landmarks within easy reach. Works well for corporate travellers and short city stays.
What to eat in Vietnam
Pho
Hanoi's signature noodle soup, eaten for breakfast at low plastic stools or in smarter dining rooms. Vegetarian pho chay, made with a vegetable broth, is widely available on request.
Bun cha
Grilled pork patties served in a sweet, tangy dipping broth with rice noodles and a basket of fresh herbs. A Hanoi lunchtime ritual best enjoyed at a busy local spot.
Cao lau and banh mi in Hoi An
Cao lau is a noodle dish found almost only in Hoi An, while the town's banh mi is considered by many the finest in the country. Vegetarian banh mi with tofu and pickled vegetables is easy to find.
Buddhist chay cuisine
Vietnam's Buddhist restaurants serve entirely vegetarian food, often with skilful mock meats and a wide range of tofu and mushroom dishes. Fish sauce is common elsewhere, so it is worth asking for food without nuoc mam.
Travel tips for Vietnam
Getting there from India
Direct flights connect Delhi with Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in around four and a half to five hours.
For travellers from India
Direct flights from Delhi reach Hanoi in about four hours and Ho Chi Minh City in about five. Indian travellers apply for an e-visa online, ideally two to three weeks ahead, and vegetarians do well in Buddhist chay restaurants, though fish sauce must be ruled out explicitly elsewhere. Carry some Vietnamese dong for markets, and modest dress is expected at temples and pagodas.
Visas & entry
Indian passport holders need a visa for Vietnam. Rules and processing times change, so we confirm the current requirements when you book, prepare the document checklist with you, and help schedule any appointments.
