Why Australia

Sydney and Melbourne for cities and food, the Great Barrier Reef for water, the Red Centre for silence. Australia deserves at least twelve days; we plan internal flights so the distances disappear.

Plan a journey to Australia

Most visited places in Australia

The placesworth the journey.

  1. 01 · Harbour

Sydney Harbour & the Opera House

Few cities have a setting like Sydney Harbour, with the white sails of the Opera House facing the Harbour Bridge across Circular Quay. Ferries cross the water to Manly and Watsons Bay, and the Royal Botanic Garden curves along the shore beside it.

Our tip Take the ferry to Manly in the late afternoon for the finest view of the Opera House and bridge from the water.

  2. 02 · Coastal walk

    Bondi to Coogee coastal walk

A six-kilometre clifftop path links Bondi, Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Coogee, passing sheltered coves and sea pools cut into the sandstone. The ocean pool at the southern end of Bondi, with waves breaking over its edge, is one of the most photographed spots in Sydney, and Waverley Cemetery's clifftop setting is quietly striking.

Our tip Start at Bondi early in the morning and pause for breakfast at Bronte or Clovelly along the way.

  3. 03 · National park

    Blue Mountains

Around two hours west of Sydney, the Blue Mountains are a World Heritage landscape of sandstone cliffs and eucalyptus valleys, named for the blue haze given off by the trees. The Three Sisters rock formation at Echo Point is the most famous view.

Our tip Arrive at Echo Point early, then walk the quieter Prince Henry Cliff Walk to escape the crowds.

  4. 04 · City culture

    Melbourne's laneways

Melbourne's personality reveals itself in narrow laneways such as Degraves Street and Hosier Lane, lined with street art, tiny bars and espresso counters where coffee is taken very seriously. The National Gallery of Victoria, Federation Square and the Queen Victoria Market are all within an easy walk.

Our tip Join a local guide for a morning laneway walk, and save Hosier Lane for midweek when it is quieter.

  5. 05 · Scenic drive

    Great Ocean Road

Built by returned soldiers after the First World War, this coastal road winds west from Melbourne past surf beaches, seaside towns and the temperate rainforest of the Otways, where koalas sit in roadside gums. Its finale is the Twelve Apostles, limestone stacks rising from the Southern Ocean near Port Campbell.

Our tip Stay overnight along the route, or take a helicopter flight over the Apostles to avoid a long return drive.

  6. 06 · Reef

    Great Barrier Reef

The world's largest coral reef system stretches more than two thousand kilometres along the Queensland coast. From Cairns or Port Douglas, boats reach the outer ribbon reefs for snorkelling and diving among turtles, giant clams and reef sharks, while a scenic flight reveals the pattern of reefs and cays from above.

Our tip Choose a smaller boat to the outer reef from Port Douglas, and visit between June and October for the clearest water.

Six days in Australia

Sydney's harbour and the Blue Mountains, followed by Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road.

A starting point, not a package: we reshape the days around your dates, pace and who is travelling.

Shape this itinerary
  1. Day01

    Sydney · Arrival

Your driver meets you at the airport for a drive of around thirty minutes into the city. After settling in, walk along Circular Quay to the Opera House at sunset.

  2. Day02

    Sydney · Harbour and beaches

Take a private tour behind the scenes at the Opera House, followed by lunch on the water. Spend the afternoon walking the coastal path from Bondi to Bronte.

  3. Day03

Blue Mountains · A day in the hills

Leave early with a private guide for the Three Sisters at Echo Point, then walk a section of the cliff-top track to waterfalls and lookouts over the Jamison Valley. Stop in Leura for its gardens and galleries before the drive back down to Sydney in time for dinner.

  4. Day04

    Melbourne · Laneways and galleries

A morning flight of around an hour and a half brings you to Melbourne. A local guide introduces the laneways and arcades over coffee, leaving the late afternoon for the National Gallery of Victoria.

  5. Day05

Great Ocean Road · The Twelve Apostles

Set out early with a private driver along the coast, stopping at Bells Beach and Lorne. For a shorter day, a helicopter from Melbourne visits the Apostles in a few hours.

Where to stay in Australia

  • The Rocks & Circular Quay, Sydney

Sandstone lanes from the colonial era, harbour views and the Opera House a few minutes on foot. A first trip to Sydney, or a couple's anniversary, is well placed here.

  • Melbourne CBD & Southbank

The grid of the city centre puts the laneways, theatres and galleries on foot, while Southbank adds riverside dining across the Yarra. Food lovers and corporate groups gravitate here.

  • Port Douglas

A small, low-key town where the reef boats leave in the morning and the Daintree rainforest is an easy drive north. Honeymooners and families with older children get two World Heritage sites from one base.

What to eat in Australia

  • Sydney seafood

Sydney rock oysters, Moreton Bay bugs and line-caught fish appear on menus across the harbour, often with the Opera House in view. For something informal, the fish market at Pyrmont is busy and generous at lunchtime.

  • Melbourne coffee and brunch

Breakfast in Melbourne is a long, considered affair of single-origin coffee, sourdough and seasonal plates. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are standard rather than an afterthought, and the city also has a deep bench of Indian restaurants.

  • Modern Australian dining

Many chefs work with native ingredients such as finger lime, wattleseed and saltbush in tasting menus. Vegetarian versions are widely offered, and Jain requirements can be met with notice.

  • Yarra Valley wine and produce

An hour east of the city, the Yarra Valley pairs cool-climate chardonnay and sparkling wine with cheesemakers, chocolatiers and orchards. A hot-air balloon at dawn makes a memorable start for those willing to rise early.
