Why United States

Most first journeys to the United States begin in New York and continue west: the California coast, the national parks of Utah and Arizona, or Florida with children. We plan the distances so the trip feels like a series of good places, not a series of airports.

Plan a journey to United States

Most visited places in United States

The placesworth the journey.

  1. 01 · National monument

Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

A gift from France in 1886, the Statue of Liberty holds her torch over New York Harbor. The same ferry continues to Ellis Island, where more than twelve million immigrants were processed, and whose museum tells the story of the people who arrived in its great hall.

Our tip Reserve pedestal or crown access months ahead, and take the first ferry from Battery Park to avoid the long midday security queues.

  2. 02 · Park and museum

    Central Park and the Met

More than three hundred hectares of meadows, lakes and woodland stretch through the heart of Manhattan. On its eastern edge, the Metropolitan Museum of Art holds an encyclopaedic collection spanning five thousand years, from an Egyptian temple to a superb gallery of South Asian art.

Our tip Explore the park by private pedicab or on a guided cycle in the morning, then visit the Met in the afternoon when school groups have left.

  3. 03 · City skyline

    Midtown Manhattan

Times Square's neon, the Art Deco spire of the Chrysler Building and the shops of Fifth Avenue form the city most visitors picture. Observation decks at the Empire State Building, Top of the Rock and Summit One Vanderbilt each offer a different perspective on the skyline.

Our tip Choose Top of the Rock at sunset, which places the Empire State Building directly in your view.

  4. 04 · Waterfalls

    Niagara Falls

Three waterfalls on the border between the United States and Canada pour a vast volume of water over a cliff into the Niagara Gorge. From the American side, the boat to the foot of Horseshoe Falls and the Cave of the Winds walkway bring you close enough to feel the spray.

Our tip Boat tours run only from late spring to autumn, and crossing to the Canadian side requires a separate Canadian visa.

  5. 05 · Monuments

    The National Mall, Washington

The Mall stretches from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, with the Washington Monument at its centre. It is lined with the Smithsonian museums, all free, from the National Air and Space Museum to the National Museum of American History.

Our tip Visit the memorials after dark, when they are illuminated, quieter and cooler on summer evenings.

  6. 06 · Natural wonder

    Grand Canyon

Carved by the Colorado River over millions of years, the canyon reaches a depth of more than a mile and stretches some 450 kilometres across Arizona. The South Rim offers the classic viewpoints, and a helicopter flight from Las Vegas reveals its full scale.

Our tip Watch sunrise from Mather Point or Yavapai Point, when the low light draws out the layers of red and ochre rock.

Where to stay in United States

  • Upper East Side, New York

Quiet, residential streets beside Central Park and close to the Met and Fifth Avenue. Ideal for families who want space and calm after busy days.

  • Tribeca and SoHo, New York

Cobbled streets, converted warehouses and the city's best restaurants and boutiques. Well suited to honeymooners and younger travellers who enjoy design and evenings out.

  • Georgetown, Washington

Federal-style townhouses along the Potomac, with a refined but relaxed atmosphere. A good fit for corporate travellers and families wanting a peaceful last stop.

What to eat in United States

  • The New York bagel

Hand-rolled, boiled and baked, then spread with cream cheese, a bagel is New York's essential breakfast. Plain and vegetable cream cheese versions keep it vegetarian.

  • The New York slice

Thin, foldable pizza from a neighbourhood counter is a city ritual. A plain cheese slice is the classic vegetarian order.

  • Indian food in Jackson Heights

Queens and Murray Hill's Curry Hill are home to many Indian restaurants and sweet shops, including vegetarian ones that serve Jain meals. Useful for families travelling with elders who prefer familiar food.

  • Tasting menus

New York's leading restaurants serve elaborate tasting menus, and several will prepare a full vegetarian version when asked in advance. A memorable choice for an anniversary or celebration.
