Why Italy

Italy is best taken in pieces: Rome and Florence for history, Venice for two quiet nights, then the Amalfi Coast or Lake Como to slow down. We keep transfers short and build in afternoons with nothing planned.

Plan a journey to Italy

Most visited places in Italy

The placesworth the journey.

  1. 01 · Ancient site

    Colosseum and Roman Forum

Opened in 80 AD, the Colosseum once held fifty thousand spectators for gladiatorial games and public spectacles. Beside it, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill preserve the temples, triumphal arches and imperial palaces that formed the political heart of the ancient city.

Our tip Book a guided entry that includes the arena floor or underground chambers, and visit the Palatine first, while the Colosseum queues are still forming.

  2. 02 · Museum and basilica

    Vatican Museums and St Peter's

Corridors of tapestries, maps and classical sculpture lead to the Raphael Rooms and finally the Sistine Chapel, where Michelangelo painted the ceiling and the Last Judgement. Next door, St Peter's Basilica holds his Pietà beneath a dome that can be climbed for views over Rome.

Our tip Choose an early-entry private tour before public opening, and cover shoulders and knees for both the Sistine Chapel and St Peter's.

  3. 03 · Renaissance city

    Florence's Duomo and the Uffizi

Brunelleschi's terracotta dome, still the largest masonry dome ever built, rises above Florence, the city where the Renaissance took shape. A short walk away, the Uffizi Gallery holds Botticelli's Birth of Venus alongside works by Leonardo, Michelangelo and Caravaggio, while the Accademia shelters Michelangelo's David.

Our tip Dome climbs and Uffizi entries sell out weeks ahead in summer, so reserve both as soon as travel dates are fixed.

  4. 04 · Lagoon city

    Venice

Built on more than a hundred islands, Venice is laced with canals and crossed by some four hundred bridges. St Mark's Basilica gleams with Byzantine mosaics, the Doge's Palace connects to the Bridge of Sighs, and the Grand Canal is lined with centuries of palazzo façades.

Our tip Explore Dorsoduro and Cannaregio after the day visitors leave, and check the city's access fee calendar for peak-season day trips.

  5. 05 · Coastline

    Amalfi Coast

Pastel villages cling to cliffs above the Tyrrhenian Sea, linked by a single winding road. Positano tumbles to its beach, Amalfi is crowned by a striped cathedral, and Ravello, high above the water, offers villa gardens and terraces with sweeping views of the coast.

Our tip Travel between villages by private boat rather than road in summer; it is faster, calmer and shows the coast at its best.

  6. 06 · Alpine lake

    Lake Como

A deep, slender lake framed by mountains, Como has drawn aristocrats and artists to its shores for centuries. Bellagio sits on the point where the lake divides, and villa gardens such as Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta descend in terraces to the water.

Our tip Book a private boat with a skipper for a half day, timing the trip for late afternoon when the light softens on the villas.

Take the high-speed train to Florence, a journey of about an hour and a half. Spend the afternoon at the Uffizi and the Duomo, then watch the sun set over the Arno from Piazzale Michelangelo.

  4. Day04

  5. Day05

    Venice · The Grand Canal

A two-hour train journey brings you to Venice, where a private water taxi carries you to your hotel. Spend the afternoon at St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace, followed by a gondola ride through quieter canals.

Where to stay in Italy

  • Rome's historic centre

Staying between the Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona places fountains, churches and restaurants on your doorstep. Best for families and first-time visitors who want to walk everywhere.

  • Florence, Oltrarno and the river

Across the Ponte Vecchio, Oltrarno is a quieter district of artisan workshops and palazzo hotels with gardens. Honeymooners and repeat visitors appreciate its slower, more local feel.

  • Venice, San Marco and the Grand Canal

Grand palazzo hotels on the canal give you the city's most famous views and private boat landings. Ideal for VIP clients and couples wanting the classic Venetian experience.

What to eat in Italy

  • Roman pasta

Cacio e pepe, made with pecorino and black pepper, is the most beloved of Rome's simple pastas and naturally vegetarian. Strict vegetarians should know that traditional pecorino and Parmigiano use animal rennet.

  • Pizza

Thin and crisp in Rome, soft and blistered in the Neapolitan style elsewhere, a Margherita is a reliable vegetarian meal anywhere in Italy. Kitchens are generally happy to leave out garlic for Jain diners.

  • Gelato

Look for gelaterie that keep their gelato in covered metal tins rather than towering, brightly coloured mounds. Fruit sorbets such as lemon and mango are usually dairy-free and egg-free.

  • Cicchetti in Venice

Venetians gather in small wine bars, called bacari, for cicchetti, small bites on bread eaten standing at the counter. Seafood dominates, but grilled vegetables, cheeses and marinated artichokes are always on offer.

Travel tips for Italy

Getting there from India

Flights from Delhi reach Rome or Milan in around eight to ten hours, direct or with one stop. Between cities we use high-speed trains and private transfers.

For travellers from India

Flights from Delhi to Rome or Milan take around eight to nine hours nonstop where available, or a little longer via a Gulf hub, and Italy issues Schengen visas, which should be applied for at least six weeks ahead in summer. Italian menus are easy for vegetarians, with Indian restaurants found in all major cities. A small coperto, or cover charge, appears on most bills, so tipping is not expected, though rounding up is welcome.

Visas & entry

Indian passport holders need a visa for Italy (Schengen). Rules and processing times change, so we confirm the current requirements when you book, prepare the document checklist with you, and help schedule any appointments.

Good to know

Vegetarian Italian food is excellent and easy. Churches require covered shoulders and knees.
