Why Greece
Santorini is the image everyone knows; the best Greek journeys add a quieter island too — Milos, Paros or Naxos — and a night or two in Athens. Ideal for honeymoons from late spring to early autumn.

The placesworth the journey.
The Acropolis
The marble columns of the Parthenon have stood above Athens since the fifth century BC, a temple to Athena and a symbol of classical Greece. The rock also holds the Erechtheion, with its maiden-shaped columns, and the elegant temple of Athena Nike at the gateway.
Our tip Enter at opening time or in the last two hours before closing; the midday sun on the marble is fierce in summer.
Acropolis Museum
This light-filled modern museum stands at the foot of the hill, with glass floors revealing an excavated Athenian neighbourhood below. The top gallery displays the Parthenon frieze at its original orientation, with the temple itself visible through the windows, so you can compare carving and building side by side.
Our tip Visit the museum after the Acropolis, and stay for a drink on its terrace, which faces the Parthenon directly.
Plaka and Anafiotika
Beneath the north slope of the Acropolis, Plaka's lanes are lined with neoclassical houses, tavernas and small Byzantine churches. Climbing higher, the whitewashed cottages of Anafiotika were built by islanders from Anafi, giving the heart of Athens an unexpectedly Cycladic look.
Our tip Walk here in the early evening, when the heat fades, and dine on a rooftop facing the illuminated Acropolis.
Santorini
Santorini's whitewashed villages line the rim of a submerged volcanic caldera, with cliffs plunging hundreds of metres into the sea. Oia is famous for its sunsets, Fira for its clifftop paths, and the Bronze Age city of Akrotiri preserves streets buried by an eruption more than three thousand years ago.
Our tip Watch the sunset from Imerovigli or a private catamaran rather than in Oia, where the crowds gather shoulder to shoulder.
Mykonos
Mykonos Town is a maze of whitewashed lanes, blue doors and chapels, opening onto the windmills on the hill above. Little Venice sees balconies hang directly over the sea, while the beaches of the south coast range from calm family coves to lively beach clubs.
Our tip Take a boat to the island of Delos, one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, on a calm morning.
Meteora
Byzantine monasteries perch on top of sandstone pillars rising from the plain of Thessaly, built by monks seeking solitude from the fourteenth century onwards. Six remain active, and their frescoed chapels are reached by stone steps that were once climbed only by rope ladder.
Our tip Check opening days, as each monastery closes on a different day of the week, and come at sunset for the light on the rocks.

Where to stay in Greece
Athens, Plaka and Makrygianni
Hotels at the foot of the Acropolis keep the ancient sites within walking distance. Ideal for families and first-time visitors with only a few nights in the city.
Santorini, Imerovigli and Oia
Cave suites with private plunge pools and uninterrupted caldera views, high on the island's rim. Particularly loved by honeymooners and couples marking an anniversary.
Mykonos, Agios Ioannis and Ornos
Villas and resort hotels above sheltered bays on the south-west coast, close to the town but away from its late-night energy. Well suited to families and groups wanting privacy and space.
What to eat in Greece
Meze
A table of small plates to share: tzatziki, melitzanosalata, grilled halloumi and dolmades. Much of a meze spread is vegetarian, though Jain diners should ask about garlic, which appears in many dips.
Santorini fava
A silky purée of yellow split peas grown in the island's volcanic soil, finished with olive oil and capers. It is vegan, deeply savoury and served across the island.
Horiatiki salad and spanakopita
The classic village salad of tomato, cucumber, olives and a slab of feta, alongside flaky spinach and cheese pie. Both are reliable vegetarian staples.
Loukoumades
Warm Greek doughnuts drizzled with honey and sprinkled with cinnamon and walnuts. Athens has dedicated shops serving them fresh, and they are a lovely treat for children.
Travel tips for Greece
Getting there from India
Usually one stop from Delhi to Athens, around nine to eleven hours. Island hops are by ferry or short flights.
For travellers from India
Travel from Delhi to Athens usually takes nine to eleven hours with one stop via the Gulf or Istanbul, and Greece is part of the Schengen area, so apply for your visa well in advance of summer. Vegetarian food is plentiful, and some Indian restaurants operate in Athens and Santorini. Rounding up the bill or leaving five to ten per cent at a taverna is customary.
Visas & entry
Indian passport holders need a visa for Greece (Schengen). Rules and processing times change, so we confirm the current requirements when you book, prepare the document checklist with you, and help schedule any appointments.
