The Schengen visa, explained for Indian travellers

One visa for most of Europe — what it covers, how the process works, and how to avoid the common delays.

What the Schengen visa covers

A Schengen short-stay visa lets you travel across the countries of the Schengen Area on one visa — including France, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands. The United Kingdom is not part of Schengen and needs its own visa.

You apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If nights are equal, you apply to the country you enter first.

When to start

Appointments in Delhi can be scarce before the May–June school holidays and Diwali. We recommend beginning the process as soon as your itinerary and hotels are confirmed, and well before you need your passport back.

Documents to prepare

Typically: a valid passport with blank pages, recent photographs, confirmed itinerary and hotel bookings, flight reservations, travel insurance meeting Schengen requirements, bank statements and income documents, and a cover letter. Requirements differ slightly by consulate and change over time — we prepare a personalised checklist for each traveller.

How we help

We build the itinerary to match your application, prepare document checklists for every family member, and help schedule biometrics appointments. For official requirements, always refer to the relevant consulate or its appointed visa centre.
